Being Human

The Angel Way

I was born animal and angel. Two ways within me so seemingly at odds: The scrappy fighter and the compassionate lover. The incessant hunger that screams and hollers; and the silent serenity of Being. The craving and the caring. The getting and the giving. The ambitious and the helpful. Every insecure, mean and selfish human [...]

If God Lives in Me As Me

If I believe that God lives in me as me, then what do I do about that? How do I begin to make that real? Is this what “realizing God” really means? Typically we look for God in a church, in a guru, in a marriage or a child, on a mountaintop, in a sacred [...]

Clarity and Wisdom

What is wisdom and how do we cultivate it?

Life in Soft Focus

A psychology professor once told me that despite all its bad press, denial serves a very useful and necessary purpose, a purpose he called good.

Denial is essential for our survival and sanity. If your mind didn’t soft focus the harsh edges of reality once in a while or yield up a blind spot altogether, you would, sooner or later, go insane.

Direct Experience

Hasn’t it become the way of the spiritual seeker to travel from church to church, teacher to teacher, picking up pieces of truth and wisdom here and there, in search of that elusive magnificence we can’t really know or understand until we find it? We are looking for Truth, we are looking for Wisdom, we [...]

Where is the Wisdom?

Lately, the news leaves me wondering, where’s our wisdom? We’re human beings. We are built to be wise. We are endowed with a tremendous capacity for intelligent use of our intelligence. The wisdom required for managing and stewarding our planet Earth is entirely up to us. We’re the only species who’s got it.

Finding the Transcendent

Genuine happiness and the joy it engenders really only arise from our connection to the transcendent. Any other kind of happiness is a sloppy second, a half-happiness, a false joy. The happiness and joy we are hard-wired to deeply long for, is found in the transcendent dimension of life.

The Psychology of Happiness

Everyone wants to be happy. That’s pretty universal. But we all appear to be confused about it. We’re confused about how to find happiness, how to keep it when we do, why it’s so elusive, where it comes from and why we lose it. We don’t understand why it’s so hard to be happy, to be genuinely happy.

Jesus, Bob, I and I

Jesus taught: “I am in God and God is in me.” And because he’s speaking not only of himself, but of all of us, he’s really saying: “You are in God and God is in you.”

Bob Marley takes this idea and makes a declaration: “I and I plant the corn.” God is in me and we act together as one. Such a beautiful simple statement of what Christianity calls “doing God’s will.”
