Sunset in Marrakesh

Marrakesh mosque

A view from my hotel window near dusk. July 1986

I was here on the occasion of the King’s birthday. A 5-day musical celebration was held at an old dilapidated palace. Musicians from every corner of Africa played in the blistering heat. You heard everywhere “quarante à l’ombre!“, 40 degrees in the shade! That’s 104 farenheit. The bands played early in the morning, retired in the afternoon, resumed about 6 pm, and then played all night. Life in Marrakesh in the summer is nocturnal. Shops and restaurants are closed in the heat of the day and open up from dusk until sunrise.
